Mariama Tatum

Who is Mariama Tatum?

Mariama Tatum is a Chicago-born, Atlanta bred saxophonist, singer, and songwriter. Her introduction to the Performing Arts began at four when her mother enrolled her in private violin lessons at Chicago’s Merit School of Music. Mariama was introduced to the saxophone by her band director at the infamous Jean Childs Young Middle School. She continued to develop as a musician throughout high school with the Georgia State University’s Rialto Youth Jazz Orchestra where she performed as a tenor saxophonist and the orchestra’s jazz vocalist. Mariama also performed as a featured youth jazz artist at the Atlanta Jazz Festivals of 2008-2013. Mariama’s excellence as a tenor saxophonist was recognized by the Georgia Music Educators Association which nominated her as first chair tenor saxophonist for the district’s All-State Symphonic Band as well as first chair tenor saxophonist for the district’s All-State Jazz Band in the same year.

Her passion for music performance continued throughout her college years where she was trained at the prestigious Berklee College of Music and received a bachelor's in Music Business. She developed her own entertainment company in 2022 and since then has been afforded opportunities to play private events for individuals and organizations such as the PricewaterhouseCoopers Company, International School of Atlanta, The Association of Independent Music Publishers, and venues including Sweet Auburn Brewery, The Sanctuary, Smith’s Olde Bar, The Loft at Centerstage and Hotel Clairmont. Ultimately, Mariama wants to use her passion for music and performance to inspire other female musicians like herself to follow and cultivate their musical aspirations.
